Bob Lehman

About Me

Bob Lehman is the Executive Director of the San Diego Museum Council advocating on behalf of 70+ museums and cultural institutions throughout San Diego County. Prior to that Bob served as the Director of Sales & Marketing for the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre in Indianapolis. During COVID-19, Bob helped develop "The Park at the Phoenix!" an ingenious space created in its parking lot as a COVID-safe outdoor stage for the public to enjoy live entertainment. He is the former Executive Director of the Finest City Performing Arts, Inc., a performing arts non-profit consisting of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, the SDGMC Chamber Chorale and a wide range of mission-focused community outreach activities. The organization was selected “Non-profit of the Year” in 2016 by the Greater San Diego Business Association and was a San Diego Ad Club “Non-Profit Brand of the Year” finalist. During his time with the Chorus, it tripled in size and nearly quadrupled its revenues to become one of the largest and most well-known Choruses in the world. Bob had been involved with the Chorus since 1998, leading the organization since 2013. He previously served as Membership Director, Marketing Director and President of the Board.

Bob also served on the board of directors for the Choral Consortium of San Diego, the Community Advisory Council for San Diego Pride and the Community Advisory Council for the Lambda Archives/San Diego History Center Project. For more than 20 years, Bob has been a nationally recognized leader in the fight for LGBTQ equality. As a combat U.S. Marine veteran, he helped end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as the first openly gay veteran on a U.S. Congressional military advisory board. He co-founded the Stonewall Citizens’ Patrol in 2006 and he and his husband made history as the first two men to legally marry in California history. Two San Diego Mayors have honored Lehman with a day in his honor for his community service and in 2016, the City named him “Humanitarian of the Year.”

Check out the latest from On the Aisle's Tom Alvarez with his wide-ranging interview with the Phoenix's Bob Lehman, looking at how the combat Marine veteran and gay activist is making an impact. Read more about Indy's arts scene anytime at TomAlvarez.Studio.

A U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran (he served from (1983-1993), Lehman was one of the country’s most outspoken activists in ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and became the first openly gay veteran to serve on a U.S. Congressional military advisory board. He and his husband Tom Felkner, who have been together for 27 years, were national leaders in the fight for marriage equality, making history as the first two men to legally marry in California history. Two San Diego mayors have honored Lehman with a day in his honor for his community service and in 2016, the city named him “Humanitarian of the Year.”

I was intrigued to learn more about Lehman and his background, so I reached out to him for an interview that took place in the lobby of Phoenix Cultural Centre in downtown Indy, as well as through subsequent emails. Below is an edited transcript of our communications. Read the full interview here on TomAvarez.Studio
